Folios 167-168: Andrew Smith, Greenock. He responds with information about two men Peter Martin and John Mare, who claim they are Americans and who have been impressed. He reports that John Mare was on board HMS Alfred and had an American protection but also papers showing he had served aboard the Neptune and the Emerald but both had belonged originally to another man. Another man Archibald McKellan claims he is a militiaman but Captain Smith sayes he was employed aboard a fishing boat. Captain Smith is of the view that he earns his living as a fisherman can only joined the militia to protect him from being impressed.

He confirms that Archibald McKellan has been a militi man for fourteen years and also resided on the duke's estate at Rosneath, Dumbartonshire.
