This series contains the records of the Assessment Unit and the Innovation and Technology Support Budget Management Unit which were under the Technology and Innovation Policy Division, and later its successors the Technology and Standards Directorate, and Innovation Policy and Standards Directorate.

The AU prefix covers the work of the Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) Assessment Unit (AU). The unit carried out evaluations on programmes that received DTI funding. The records largely consist of evaluation reports and their related documents. The AU prefix was created in 1985 to provide a distinct filing system for Research and Technology Policy (RTP) Division’'s Assessment Unit (1985-1993). The unit carried out evaluations of DTI expenditure under the Science & Technology Act. In 1994, it became part of the Innovation Policy Division. In 1995, it became part of the Technology and Innovation Policy Division (TI) until 1996. In 1997, it then became part of the Technology and Standards Directorate (TS), and then, in 1999, part of the Innovation Policy and Standards Directorate (IPS).

The IXX prefix was created in July 1994 for use by the Innovation and Technology Support Budget Management (branch TI 1) of the DTI'’s Technology and Innovation Policy Division (TI). In 1996, this branch became part of the Technology and Innovation (Policy and Budget) Directorate (TS TIPB) of the Technology and Standards Directorates (TS); later again it became Innovation Budget Management Unit (TS IBMU). In 1999, IBMU became part of Innovation Policy and Standards Directorate (IPS), and later in 2001, it became the Group Resource Unit (GRU) of the Business Competitiveness Directorate.
