Administrative / biographical background

The London Transport Authority (LTA) Division was set up in 1998 within the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions to liaise with the Government Office for London (GOL). The division was tasked with policy work on setting up the London transport aspects of the new Greater London Authority (GLA). This became known as Transport for London (TFL). Aspects for the London underground service were transferred to the GLA in 2000. Responsibility for the London underground did not transfer to TFL until the completion of the public private partnership (PPP) in 2003. The PPP was the responsibility of the sister London Under Ground Division (LUD) that liaised with GOL.
