Description

Folios 132-133: James Slade, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. Asked in Admiralty letter of 8 October to state the case of Richard Shilson, who was impressed out of the Hope schooner of Brixham, on 3 October by Lt Carterson. There was another person aboard giving orders called Villery, and they assumed this man to be the mate and master, rather than Shilson, who claims to be the mate. The ship was aground, and in getting her off Villery was observed to be officiating, so that Lt Carter went aboard and asked for Captain Villery. They pressed Shilson as being unprotected. Shilson is 22 years old, an able seaman, and has been discharged to the schooner Herring to complete her crew.

Folios 134-135: enclosure with folios 132-133. Letter from Roger Heyne[?] of Brixham, Devon, dated 6 October 1811. Says the Hope is being delayed for want of Shilson, who is mate and master. He encloses his master's affidavit and description [not now present]. Admiralty note on back of folio 133 says cannot be granted.
