Description

Folios 126-127: James Keith Shepard, Regulating Officer, Gravesend. Asked to report on the impressment of William Wright, lately on board the El Corso, who was taken on 27 September by Lt Jordan, having been found stowed away aboard the Nerina, of which ship he was second mate. He is 5' 6 1/2", aged 18 to 19, and has been at sea for over 3 years.

Folios 128-129: enclosure with folios 126-127. Letter from John Jackson, at New Broad Street, dated 8 October 1811, and saying Lord Keith has sent him the enclosed letters, and he hopes they will attend to the matter, as William Wright is not a common seaman but a 'young gentleman intended to command a merchant ship.'

Folios 130-131: enclosure with folios 126-127. Letters from Alex Wright, the boy's father, and William Cadell. Wright says if their Lordships will apply to any of the county gentlemen acquainted with the Hon. Captain Flemming Elphinstone, they will confirm that William is to go out on his next voyage as first mate in a merchantman and thus would be protected from naval service - if he serves now his merchant experience will count for nothing. Cadell's letter says that the 'gentlemen of Stirlingshire' having heard of the matter after the Michaelmas meeting', they suggest Wright contact Lord Keith or the Hon Wm Elphinstone, and John Jackson of the [East] India Company to eneavour to have the young man set at liberty. However, admiralty note on rear of folio 126 says no grounds for discharge.
