The Patent Office was set up in 1852 to grant patents. The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has been the operating name of The Patent Office since April 2007. It is the official UK government body responsible for intellectual property (IP) rights including patents, designs, trade marks and copyright. The IPO is an executive agency and has been previously sponsored by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS), the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). From 2023, it has been sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. The IPO also works with the Company Names Tribunal.
The IPO is in charge of developing IP policy; granting UK patents, trade marks and design rights; educating businesses and consumers about IP rights and responsibilities; and supporting IP enforcement.
