Description

Folios 98-100. Letter dated at St James's from Lord Rochford to Lord Harcourt that the King, having considered Harcourt's letter of 5 October and the enclosures on the subject of the 27th Regiment, views the presence of many of its officers on shore after embarkation 'a conviction of a great want of discipline in that corps, which is not a little corroborated by so high a breach of law as the riot at Mullinagar'. The delay in the regiment's sailing attracts the King's criticism of Lord Blayney's lack of enforcement of the discipline necessary on embarkation as a result of which Harcourt is to issue an order that when a regiment has embarked no officer may go on shore other than on regimental business without the express leave from officer in command of embarkation. The King thinks that the matter of the clothing should, for the reasons given, be dealt with privately.
