Description

Folios 53-68. Letter dated at Dublin Castle from Lord Harcourt to Lord Rochford. After listing the enclosures, Harcourt explains, in relation to Straton's letter [folios 63-64] that he had the officers and private men left behind at Cork detained in order to appear at the next assizes at Mullinagar in connection with breaking open the gaol there in order to rescue a soldier held under sentence of death for rape and hopes the arrangements he made to replace them meet with the King's approval. Enclosures: Folios 55-56: Letter dated 27 September on board the America transport from Colonel Eyre Massey to General Sir John Irwine complaining of his treatment by Lord Blayney for which he will seek redress at some point. He goes on to explain that he has applied ten times to the Agent [Tonken] to go to sea and as a proof of Lord Blayney's not knowing he encloses affidavits [folios 59-62] from the volunteers from the cavalry who refused to board although the rest of the regiment were embarked. Also enclosed: Folios 57-58: Letter dated at Cork from Colonel John Straton to Colonel Massey that Lord Blayney be informed in writing of the reasons why Massey did not comply with the orders for the embarkation of his regiment, 27th Foot, which did not sail with the other transports because many of the officers, non-commissioned officers and men were on shore, some of the chests of arms were not on board and most of the baggage on the deck. Copy. Folio 59: Affidavit of John O'Brien 27th Foot sworn at Cove 27 September 1775 that on leaving his previous regiment the 4th of Horse there was due to him a suit of clothes and a laced hat which he neither received or was paid for and believes Samuel McClean, Patrick Gainer and Maurice Brown have the same demand on the 4th Regiment of Horse. Folio 60: Affidavit of John Mortimer 27th Foot sworn at Cove 27 September 1775 that on leaving his previous regiment the 3rd Horse there was a suit of clothes due to him which he neither received nor was paid for and believes that Alexander Adamson, Henery [sic] McCoy, Charles McDaniel, John Hobbs, Terrence Kellet and Barachia[h] Dowe have the same demand on the 3rd Horse. They were allegedly overcharged a penny per night for forage when on Dublin duty from 10 June 1774 to 15 June 1775. Folio 61: Affidavit of Jacob Manly 27th Foot sworn at Cove 27 September 1775 that he never received the bounty money of £5 5s 6d sterling promised by Lieutenant-Colonel Martin Tucker. Folio 62: Affidavit of John Green 27th Foot sworn at Cove 27 September 1775 that on leaving his previous regiment the 1st of Horse there was a suit of clothes due to him for which he never received the least consideration and for which he was stopped £18 5s. Folios 63-64: Letter dated at Cork from Colonel Straton to the Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief reporting the state of the embarkations at Cork and the issues with the 27th Foot. Folios 65-66: Letter dated on board the Juliana transport from Thomas Tonken to Colonel Straton detailing the orders he has issued in light of the change of destination of the transports. Folios 67-68: A return of the officers, non-commissioned and private men of the 27th Foot left behind at Cork 28 September 1775.
