Description

Folios 23-28. Letter dated at Dublin Castle from Lord Harcourt to Lord Rochford enclosing two letters from George Carleton, the agent for the embarkation at Cork to Alexander Mangin [First Clerk, Chief Secretary's Office] at Dublin Castle about the embarkations at Cork. Enclosing: Folios 25-26: 28 September. There has been no account from the express boats sent after the four transports that sailed last Tuesday [26 September]. A messenger has been sent to Lieutenant [Thomas] Tonken at Cove [Cork Harbour] with a letter from [Cadwallader] Lord Blaney [Commander-in Chief, Munster] about this. Carleton asks leave to refer Mangin to what Blayney may write to Sir John Blaquiere [Chief Secretary of Ireland] and General Irwin by the messenger. Folios 27-28: 27 September. Carleton gives a detailed account of the action taken following his forwarding a letter to Tonken from the Admiralty in connection with which Captain Browne of the Grosvenor transport and the 17th and 55th Foot are mentioned. The 27th Foot are all on board, ready to sail at the first opportunity but are short of room to stow their stores and baggage because of the very large quantity of stores already put on board in England for the troops abroad. The Juliana commanded by Captain Johnson, has arrived from Spithead, the other four transports for the 28th and 46th Foot are expected but Johnson knows nothing of the other two. One regiment will be put on board when the transports arrive.
