Folios 223-224: George Baker, 1st Lieutenant and Commander, HMS Cerberus, Torbay. In the absence of Captain Selby on leave, reports that he received orders from Rear Admiral Sir James Saumarez, Commander in Chief at Guernsey, to proceed with HMS Cerberus off the Seven Islands [Les Sept Iles] and cruise for 14 days for the protection of the homeward bound fleet. He has had to cease today, due to crew sickness. They have been affected for some days by contagious influenza, which continues to spread rapidly, and advice from the Surgeon was to remove those affected to maintain the safety of the remaining crew and ship. He has sent 14 men to hospital. He encloses a copy of his orders, and of the Surgeon's advice.
Folios 225-226: enclosure with folios 223-224. Copy of letter dated 14 February 1805 [1806], Valentine Duke, Surgeon, HMS Cerberus, at sea, to Lieutenant George Baker, Commander, HMS Cerberus. Advises that the ship should put into an English port so that the sick can be moved to a Naval Hospital, because of the contagious influenza which has already affected over half the crew. There has already been one fatality, and several others are dangerously ill.
Folios 227-228: enclosure with folios 223-224. Copy of orders dated 8 February 1806 from Rear Admiral James Saumarez, Commander in Chief, Guernsey, on board HMS Charwell, Guernsey Roads, to Lieutenant George Baker, Commander, HMS Cerberus. To proceed and cruise off the Seven Islands [Les Sept Iles] to protect the trade vessels. To intercept any enemy privateers, and to protect homeward bound West Indiamen which have become separated from their convoy, and to recapture any which have been taken by the enemy. To continue for 14 days, and then return to join the Rear Admiral at Guernsey Roads.
