Details of accident: The Normanton portion of the Express Train leaving York at 4:10 PM came into collision with a Hull Goods Train which was shunting on the Up Main Line. The Goods Engine, which was pushing 3 wagons and the van, had crossed from the Down to the Up Line but in consequence of the Station and distant signals not being turned on until the Goods Train commenced to crop, the Engine of the Express came up to the distant signal just as it was turned on. Every effort was made to stop the train, but a collision could not be avoided.
