Description

Folios 252-253: Sir Richard John Strachan Bart., HMS Donegal, off Cape St Maria. States that Lord Mark Kerr, he closed his dispatch has just delivered him the enclosed, which accounts for Lord Horatio Nelson's order to commence hostilities, and as His Majesty's Ministers may not be acquainted with the circumstances he encloses Lord Mark's note. The reduced state of the water and provisions of HMS Fisgard, having only six tons of water, and the impossibility of our supplying her, we being also very low, He has taken all but three weeks from HMS Fisgard & sent her to Lisbon with this dispatch and to return directly after having received his Water & provisions. He is arrived between Gibraltar & Cathagena for the protection of trade and the annoyance of the enemy & also to look out on the proceedings of the Spanish at Cathagena. He will proceed with HMS Donegal & the Prizes as speedily as possible.

Folio 254: enclosure with folios 252-253. Letter dated 28 November 1804 by Mark Kerr, HMS Ambuscade. [To Sir Richard John Strachan Bart., HMS Donegal.] On 24 November 1804 gave him intelligence by telegraph that War was proclaimed in Spain against Great Britain. An English Merchant Brig laying at Barcelona was driven out by the Batteries there, having been hulled many times by there shott. At the time we spoke her, her cargo was in danger of being damaged by the leaks occasioned by the above.
