Folios 236-237: Sir Richard John Strachan Bart., HMS Donegal, off Cape St Maria. In addition to his letters of to days date which in haste he has closed without mentioning the state of the Spanish Ships at Cadiz. He reports that there are eight Sail of the Line in Commission, Five are said to be ready for Sea, Two First Rates and Three Two Deckers. He doubts there being more than three completely ready - the Two First Rates are intended to go to Ferrol soon, they are badly Manned and all sickly. Three Frigates are also in Commission but have yards and Top Masts Struck. (States all the ships here are in very great distress for slops and Clothing; we have not an article and all the slops he is told which were at Gibraltar were taken off by HMS Amphion but even if there were Slops, it would be highly imprudent to take them or any thing from the Rock). Our Crews are at present in perfect health.
