Folios 220-221: John Stiles, HMS Alcmene, Spithead. Reports his arrival from off St Malo being order here by sam to refit and Victual and have his Copper inspected which is so foul and in so bad a state that the ship will not move; and about the Bows and in many parts of her bottom it is nearly off. The ship is also infested with rats in spite of everything they have done. Inclosed are his Weekly Account [not present], a Copy of his order from Rear Admiral Sir James Saumarez.
Folio 221 : enclosure with folios 220-221. Carpenter's defects report of HMS Alcmene. Dated 4 July 1804. Signed John Stiles and Diaper - Carpenter.
Folio 222: enclosure with folios 220-221. Letter dated 2 July 1804 by Rear Admiral Sir James Saumarez , HMS Diomede, Guernsey Roads, to John Stiles, HMS Alcmene. Orders to proceed to Spithead for the purpose of completing her stores and having her Copper inspected and return to this anchorage with all possible dispatch.
