Folios 217-218: John Serrell, HMS Cumberland, Spithead. Reports his arrival. He has delivered a list of the convoy and other necessary papers to the Commander in Chief to be forwarded. The ships bound up the Bristol Channel parted company on 21 [January 1804]. He regrets to report that the 14 ships that remained with him parted company in a gale and he was unable to collect them and assumed they had passed up the Channel. As he could no longer afford any protection to the ships under his convoy and because of the number of French prisoners on board and the defects of the ship and 400,000 dollars worth of goods on board he thought it wise to put in to this anchorage.
