Folios 165-166: John Seater, HMS Leyden, Swin. Refers to his letter of 21 February [1804] stating the case of Henry Johnson a copy of which is attached. Returns the enclosure. Copy of letter dated 21 February 1804 from John Seater, HMS Leyden, Swin, to William Marsden. In reply to an order from Rear Admiral Rowley states that Henry Johnson was sent on board his ship on 16 May [1803] in a draft of men from HMS Zealand. It seems he was impressed on 13 [May 1803] out of the American ship Sally at Gravesend having no documents to prove his citizenship.
Folio 167: enclosure with folios 165-166. Affidavit sworn 8 February 1804 before Peter Whitfield Brancker, Justice of the Peace for the Borough of Liverpool. William Lees of Liverpool, Merchant, swore that Henry Johnson, a Black man, now on board HMS Leyden, is a native American, born in the state of New Jersey. He has been a servant in his employment for many years during his residence in America and married a Negro woman also in his service as a slave whose freedom Henry Johnson bought by his own servitude to the deponent.
