Folio 157: John Clarke Searle, HMS Monarch, Downs. William Cook, Purser of HMS Charon for over 7 years, has asked for his recommendation in order to facilitate him obtaining a larger ship. He was his Clerk in HMS Pelican in 1795 and 1796 and as well as performing his duties with diligence and punctuality he distinguished himself by his gallantry on several occasions in particular in an action with a French frigate which earned him his appointment to HMS Charon. The letters of Captains Schomberg, Manly and Drury addressed to the former Board are flattering testimonies of his conduct in HMS Charon.
