Description

Folios 151-152: Christopher Strachey, HMS Jalouse, off Deptford. Reports on the accident that occurred on 16th October during daylight hours. He was anxious to get clear of the tiers of shipping having seventy-nine Seaman and nine boys on board from HMS Latona who were to be taken to HMS Resistance. The ship was hauled off into the stream with the intent of dropping down into her former berth although the Pilot warned of the effect of the weather. Due to an error by the Pilot misjudged the distance to the shore. The fog was too thick to move further, the tide was falling fast, the kedge, top gallant and masts were taken down and the guns run in. At low water the Jalouse was found to be resting on the mooring chains, about eight feet of false keel, butt ends and copper damaged. In the afternoon she was got off with help from the dockyard. The Captain would have complained earlier but was aware that the Seamen needed attending to on HMS Resistance as soon as possible.

Folio 152: enclosure with folios 151-152. List dated 16 October 1802 of defects of HMS Jalouse by Christopher Strachey, Commander and Alexander Eward, Carpenter. Lists the defects that occurred when the ship was aground on the mud abreast of Lower Deptford. Christopher Strachey, HMS Jalouse, Deptford. Encloses an account of the defects of the ship.
