Folios 139-140 : Christopher Strachey, HMS Jalouse, Margate Roads. Apologises for the length of the letter. Reports on two men. Mr. Edward Paul, Master’s Mate may be superseded because of neglect. Paul left a boat ashore yesterday evening, contrary to orders from the First Lieutenant to keep the crew together and four men deserted. The Captain asks permission to discharge Mr. George Coleman, Midshipman who after receiving similar orders, left a boat ashore. one afternoon. He comments that the two men did not appear to encourage desertion, but leaving the boats was neglectful. Remarks on the threatening behaviour by people of the lower class on shore at Margate. The Lieutenant with attendance from the sloop went immediately in search of the men, but only one was brought back. He suffered abuse from the populace and noticed that some bills inviting volunteers had been defaced.
