Folios 132-133. Charles Stirling, London. Arrived yesterday and received the Admiralty letter of 6 days ago with the enclosed letter from Mr. [Dirk. He replies that when that young gentleman left HMS Pompee he talked of leaving the service and did not want a certificate nor asked for one respecting good behaviour. The Captain cannot verify or remember that Dirk had instruments?] while under his command. Mr. Dirk has written to him twice demanding assent on his request and threatens an appeal to the Admiralty. The Captain is pleased to have the opportunity to send his reasons before replying to Dirk.
