Folios 91-92: James Stevenson, HMS Africaine, Deptford. Has received the letter from Mr Coats the late Carpenter on HM Africaine sent to Lord Keith asking to leave the service. Without being directed by Lord Keith, Coats had sufficient time to apply to the Commander in Chief before the Africiane sailed. He had permission from the first Lieutenant to go ashore, but on return hid himself on board until the ship arrived at Gibraltar. He was to have been directed to join the Minorca sloop to which he formerly belonged. Sir James Saumarez said that Coats must be brought home. Captain Stevenson asks how Coats is to be discharged.
