Description

Folios 145-146: James Keith Shepard, HMS Phoebe, Sheerness. Encloses the report of the enquiry into the conduct of Lieutenant John Lake and other relevant papers. William Bennet, who was detained as a deserter from HMS Jalouse by Commander Christopher Strachey, has been sent back to his ship and John McNamara sent to HMS Clyde.

Folios 147-154: enclosed with folios 145-146. Copy of evidence given to an enquiry on 2 August 1802 into the complaint made by Lieutenant Archibald Telfer of HMS Clyde about the conduct of Lieutenant John Lake, commanding HM Gun Brig Locust. Includes testimony from William Bennet, John McNamara, Clerk and Steward Francis Pool of HMS Jalouse and Pilot Mr Robinson. Signed as a true copy by Ro Burre [Robert Burre ?], Purser, HMS Pylades

Folios 155-156: enclosed with folios 145-146. Captain James Keith Shepard, HMS Phoebe, Commander Alexander Saunderson Burrowes and Purser Ro Burre [Robert Burre ?], HMS Pylades, and Commander Christopher Strachey and Purser James Davie, HMS Jalouse, Sheerness, 2 August 1802. Report of the court of enquiry into the complaint made by Lieutenant Archibald Telfer, HMS Clyde, over the conduct of Lieutenant John Lake, commanding HM Gun Brig Locust. They exonerate Lieutenant Lake of withholding rations from William Bennet and John McNamara. Enclose [not present] the lists sent with newly-raised men from the rendezvous so they can be compared with the receipts in the possession of Lieutenant Telfer.

Folios 157-158: enclosed with folios 145-146. Lieutenant John Lake's statement in his defence to the court of enquiry against the charge by Lieutenant Archibald Telfer of HMS Clyde that he fraudulently deprived two seamen of their rations.

Folio 159: enclosed with folios 145-146. Copy of a letter from Lieutenant John Lake, HM Gun Vessel Locust, Deptford, to Lieutenant Felger [Lieutenant Archibald Telfer] Rendezvous and Pilot, 28 July 1802. He is very surprised to receive Lieutenant Felger's letter accusing him of withholding their allowance from two men. Thinks the Lieutenant should have come himself to investigate before making such a charge.

Folio 160: enclosed with folios 145-146. Letter from Lieutenant Archibald Telfer, Rendezvous Ship and Pilot, to Lieutenant John Lake, HM Gun Brig Locust, 27 July 1802. Reports that William Bennet and John McNamara have complained to him that Lieutenant Lake has withheld their victuals. If Lieutenant Lake does not apologise, he will feel compelled to report his conduct to the Admiralty.
