Folios 171-173: Alexander Schomberg, HMS Rambler, Spithead. Will explain why he threw his guns overboard during a gale off Newfoundland on October 24 1798. He was endeavoring to fall in with HMS Castor who had sailed with 12 ships for Lisbon from St Johns. There was so much wind that he had no sail up and he hove to and lost sight of all but three of the convoy. A violent wind sent the ship broadside so she could not right and had water up to her hatches and her top sails underwater. Every man helped to get the guns overboard when their ropes were cut although the sea had been breaking over her stern and gunwales for 14 hours. She righted herself then and gave hope of living through the night although the gale ws still blowing. He did not see the convoy again and many of them must have been damaged.
