Folios 259-260: Joseph Short, [Regulating Officer], Lynn [Kings Lynn]. Covering letter for the enclosed Letters passed between him and Lieutenant Thomas Chambers on the subject of sending John Fox as an Impressed man knowing him to be a deserter from HMS Monmouth, as also his discharging John Emmerson (the Apprentice that he wrote about) after keeping him seventeen days onboard the tender. He states that John Emmerson belongs to a Greenland Ship setting out at this port and that he sent for him this morning and desired to know the reason for him being discharged. On receiving his of the 21 February 1798 by his Midshipman who brought John Fox & John Brown. He answered it with more of the 22 February 1798 a copy of which I inclose and an answer from him of the 24 February 1798 with a Certificate inclosed.
Folio 261: enclosure with folios 259-260. Letter dated 24 February 1798 by Joseph Short, [Regulating Officer] Lynn [Kings Lynn], to Lieutenant Thomas Chambers, Impress Service, Wells [Wells-next-the-Sea]. Reply to letter dated 21 February 1798, he acquaint you that you have committed a great impropriety in sending John Fox as a pressed man knowing him to be a deserter from HMS Monmouth. It also appears very strange that John Emmerson should be discharged. [gives details of the two impressments]. Seeing no incontinence attending your complying with his order of the 20 January 1798. He does not mean to alter it, but expect your returns to the end of each month, at the same time mentioning the number of men you may have ready to send to Lynn, as in your last return.
Folios 262-263: enclosure with folios 259-260. Letter dated 24 February 1798 by Thomas Chambers, Rendezvous, Wells [Wells-next-the-Sea], to Captain Joseph Short, Lynn [Kings Lynn]. Covering letter for the enclosed list of his Midshipmen and Gangsmen and also the Surgeons Certificates . He has procured no men at present. [Folio 263] A List of the Midshipmen and Gangsmen belonging to Lieutenant Thomas Chambers at his Rendezvous in Wells [Wells-next-the-Sea]. Between 20 January 1798 and 20 February 1798. [List with eleven names, 1 Midshipman and 10 Gang members with their Entry dates and Quality.
Folio 264: enclosure with folios 259-260. Report dated 24 February 1798 by H R Rumph Surgeon, Wells [Wells-next-the-Sea] n John Emmerson. PS Examined John Brown on 12 February 1798 and found him a sound man.
