Description

Folios 225-226: George James Shirley, Beaufort Building. Reply to letter dated 5 October 1798. States that their decision has caused him to charges against his Wages. He encloses [not present] the letter he received from the Surgeon [Robert Melville] and hopes they will reconsider so that the impress against his Wages can be removed.

Folios 227-228: enclosure with folios 225-226. Letter dated 28 April 1798 by Thomas L Yates, Purser, HMS Mars, at Sea, to George James Shirley. States that having read Mr [Robert] Melville, Surgeon of HMS Mars letter to you respecting the Beds and Blankets which have been supplied by him for the use of the Wounded men in time of Battle and since , when he submitted the propriety of them being thrown over board. He states that the Naval Storekeeper at the ports where we may arrive will not receive any article of stores from him without the express order of the Navy Board and as Plymouth is the most probable Port , the distance is so great, that from the heat of the season the said beds and blankets being now very offensive, that they are likely to produce vermin before any advise can be received from London. He begs leave to recommend their being thrown over board.
