Description

Folios 215-216: George James Shirley, HMS Mars. [His agents], [Richard &] Abraham Toulmin, [23 Surry St, Strand], London. Covering letter for the enclosed certificate from Captain George James Shirley, HMS Mars that the Purser did by his order supply 87 Gallons of Brandy to preserve the Corps of the late Captain Alexander Hood, also an Order from the Captain and a certificate from the Surgeon that the Purser of HMS Mars did supply 136 gallons of wine to the wounded men independent of their allowance of beer and from the very peculiar circumstances of the case He requests an order to grant that the Purser may be allowed the same for passing his Accounts in the Victualling Office.

Folio 217: enclosure with folios 215-216. Letter dated 22 April 1798 by George James Shirley, HMS Mars for the copy of the Surgeons certificate. Robert Melville Surgeon, HMS Mars/ Dated 30 April 1789. Certificate for the use of One hundred and thirty six gallons of wine for sick and wounded in addition to their beer allowance.
