Folios 229-230: Richard John Strachan, HMS Melampus, St Marcou. Returning from [Le] Havre this afternoon he met HMS Minerva off Cape Barfleur and received a letter from Captain Peyton a copy of which he encloses. HMS Syren is left off Havre but he expects her tomorrow.
Folios 231-232: enclosure with folios 229-230. Copy of letter dated 6 August 1796 from Thoms Peyton, HMS Minerva, off Cherbourg, to Sir Richard John Strahan. Today he boarded a cartel out of Cherbourg bound to Guernsey. From an English Infantry Officer he learned that the news at Cherbourg was that the Spanish and Dutch fleets had joined the French fleet at Brest and troops were marching there for embarkation supposedly for the invasion of Ireland. In corroboration the English prisoners said that on their march from Lisieux, where they had been confined, to Cherbourg they met several regiments on the march for Brest and everywhere they heard that the English and Spanish were at war. Reported vessels at Cherbourg. Reports other proceedings.
