Folios 210-211: Richard John Strachan, HMS Melampus, St Marcou. He arrived at Grouville Bay in Jersey in 6 [July 1796] with HMS Syren which had joined him from Guernsey on 4 [July 1796]. Captain D'Auvergne told him he did not require HMS Liberty's assistance and her commander had been directed to take a convoy to England. Reports his proceedings with HMS Syren cruising along the French coast. Mentions HMS Minerva, HMS Liberty, Sir Peter Parker and Captain Peyton. Explains why he has particularly directed his attention to Jersey. Mentions Alderney, Guernsey, Cherbourg, L'Hague and Grand Ancre, Cape Frehel and Cancalle Bay. In the night of 16 [July 1796] HMS Syren ran on board them and caused some damage. The islands are short of provisions because the Charming Molly and the Grand Falconer have not come from England with supplies. He has asked HMS Diamond to supply them and go to Spithead to replenish. His ship and HMS Minerva which sustained damage from the enemy's batteries are short of stores so he will take whatever HMS Diamond can spare. Encloses a letter he has just received from Captain Peyton.
