Folios 206-207: Richard John Strachan, HMS Melampus, off L'Isles St Marcou. He is leaving HMS Diamond and HMS Camilla there in order to go to Guernsey of Jersey for coals and wood. He will return as soon as possible unless detained in the absence of HMS Syren by any service near Jersey. Expresses concern about the difficulty getting water for the ships. He is sorry to be drawn away from the islands before he has time to inquire into the conduct of those on them as lack of discipline makes him fearful for their safety should they be attacked. Is sending the state and condition of vessels under his command [not present]. HMS Childers is charged with dispatches . Some time ago she ran ashore near the Needles when charged with dispatches but returned immediately to join him. He was not able to get the state and condition of HMS Badger and HMS Sandfly gun vessels.
