Description

Folios 203-204: Richard John Strachan, HMS Melampus, off L'Isles St Marcou. Replies to letter of 14 [June 1796] concerning the failure of Lieutenant Chilcot to join him as directed at St Maloes [Malo].he found that he had difficulties getting a Pilot and the Master of HMS Grand Falconer opposed sailing without one. Lieutenant Chilcot is of good character and does not which to have an enquiry unless their Lordships direct it. As regards Mr Bourne, commanding HMS Sandfly, asked about in their letter and enclosures of 18 [June 1796] he finds that he beat William Grange, but it was as a result of the man's drunken and mutinous behaviour and it was not done in the cruel manner described. Mr Bourne seems to have trouble keeping his people in order apart from the Artillery men. John Grant who made the complaint has a bad character and was a prisoner at large at the time that William Grange was beaten. Mr Bourne does not shrink from an enquiry. Captain Dacres who knows Mr Bourne speaks well of him. He will investigate further. Encloses a letter from Mr Bourne [not present] dated 20 May [1796] requesting a Court Martial on John Grant for embezzling provisions.

Folio 205: enclosure with folios 203-204. Foldover only.
