Description

Folios 190-191: Richard John Strachan, HMS Melampus, Guernsey. Reports his arrival there last night with HMS Diamond and HMS Childers. He will direct the Captain of HMS Diamond to co-operate with Captain D'Auvergne Prince of Bouillon until HMS Camilla arrives there from Plymouth when he will leave her and HMS Childers and take HMS Diamond towards Havre and the Marcon Islands where HMS Minerva is currently. HMS Syren was not there to supply provisions for HMS Diamond so he has directed Captain D'Auvergne to supply her and then proceed to Ireland. He has heard that the enemy have taken several English vessels into Morlaix. He intends to go to the Isle of Bass and take HMS Syren with him. He has directed Captain Peyton to send HMS Aimwell to Portsmouth. The gun vessels are in need of stores but cannot be allowed to leave the islands as the enemy has recently placed guns on the coast opposite the islands. He will not permit HMS Conquest or HMS Force to go to England until he has orders. He has been told that junk is required to barricade the blockhouses on the islands so he has ordered the greater part of the condemned cable from HMS Magicienne to be sent on shore, giving it in charge of Lieutenant Price of HMS Badger.
