Folios 184-185: Richard John Strachan, HMS Melampus, Barfleur. After writing his letter of 8 [May 1796] concerning the enemy preparing to sail from Havre he lost no time sending directions to the Captains of the squadron to meet him off that port. He went there with HMS Camilla and looked into the harbour on 10 [May 1796] but found the enemy had sailed. Reports his proceedings. He joined HMS Minerva, HMS Syren and HMS Diamond. They have not seen the enemy. He will proceed towards Jersey and Guernsey and if he does not find them he will go to the western limits of the station. He will leave one of the war ships to guard the St Marcon islands.
