Folios 182-183: Richard John Strachan, HMS Melampus, St Marcon. He had just finished his dispatch for HMS Grand Faulkenor [Grand Falconer] tender take to England and had sent her to the islands to receive the sick and wounded men for the hospital when a messenger arrived with a letter from Lieutenant Price of HMS Badger. It is dated 7 May 1796, and reports that Jean Baptiste Meriel patron of a boat that provides him with news told him a Commissary arrived at Havre from the Convention the day before yesterday with orders for the C[..]nol, Incorruptible, 4 16-gun corvettes and 2 luggers to put to sea immediately. By the time he received this intelligence it was too late to call in HMS Syren and HMS Minerva was not able to get in. He has not heard of HMS Diamond who he believes has taken a privateer. HMS Camilla is with him. HMS Childers is with the small vessels under the orders of Captain D'Auvergne.
