Description

Folios 234-235: Wilson Rathborne, North Shields. Sending two registers of baptism for Richard Winspear, now aboard the Lyra tender. Suspecting that the one signed by Wm Haswell was incorrect he went with Lieutenant Lapslie (who had impressed Winspear) to examine the church register. At first the clerk of the register, Thomas Kelley, had thought the first certificate was correct but when he examined it further observed that the Haswell signature was forged and the paper of the wrong kind. Rathborne says that Winspear's father had obtained the printed form from 'Mr Appleby's compositor' and 'got a low schoolmaster here to fill it up', believing that Mates under 21 years of age had been impressed in London. Notes that Winspear's father is very old and in great poverty.

Folio 236: enclosure with folios 234-235. Baptismal certificate for Richard, son of William and Catharine Winspear, dated 5 January 1791 and with the signature William Haswell.

Folio 237: enclosure with folios 234-235. Baptismal certificate for Richard, son of William and Catharine Winspear, dated 5 January 1794, signed by Thomas Kelley.
