Folios 228-229: Henry Raper, HMS Mars, Spithead. Advising that Mr Jodrell Leigh, recently appointed to the ship as a lieutenant, has not yet joined. As Mr Leigh will be the superior of his current lieutenant, Mr James Bance, an officer of great merit and enterprise and for whom Raper has great esteem, he asks if it is not too late to cancel the appointment and instead appoint someone junior to Bance, who has been with the ship for 18 months. Notes that he has been advised it would normally be Sir Joseph Yorke who would settle such matters, but because of his recent 'domestic calamity' Raper did not wish to trouble him.
