Description

Folios 176-177: Wilson Rathborne, North Shields. Responding to Mr Barrow's query of 10 February regarding John Hunter, aboard the Ceres or the Namur, and returning his certificates. Says Hunter was impressed on 21 December by Lieutenant Flinn, in accordance of Admiralty directive of 20 November stating the man was a deserter from HMS Ocean. Hunter is 31 and a fit man for the Service.

Folios 178-179:enclosure with folios 176-177. Letter dated 5 February 1812 by Joanathan Dawson, Sandgate, New Road, Newcastle, saying that John Hunter was pressed and is now at the Nore, but describing him as a 'poor man with wife and 8 children' to support, offers to find substitutes for him and confirms a sum of money will be advanced by the Parish Officer for his liberation.

Folio 180: enclosure with folios 176-177. Official protection certificate for John Hunter, naming him as a Harpooner for the ship Fortitude, of London, Master Martin Morris, and saying he has completed five voyages in the Greenland trade; exempting him from impress from 11 November 1811 for the period of this voyage.

Folio 181: enclosure with folios 176-177 Declaration that John Hunter, late of the Norge, has served as supernumerary AB seaman aboard HMS Monmouth from 24 October to 8 November 1811 and was discharged from the Service as an act of Habeas Corpus was granted. Signed by senior lieutenant and on duty captain J. Philipps.
