Folios 155-156: Wilson Rathborne, North Shields. Responding to Mr Barrow's query of 3 February re Thomas Young, now aboard the Eliza tender and returning Young's affidavit as Mate [not now present]. Young was impressed by Lieutenant Flinn at South Shields on 25 January, and retained for the Service as being an apprenticed and appointed Mate. He was bound for 7 years and had served over 4 when taken. He had been appointed Mate in another vessel but the indentures had not been cancelled. Young is 18 and very fit for service.
Folios 157-158: enclosure with folios 155-156. Statement dated 31 January 1813 by John Scott, of Chilburn near North Shields, that Young had bound himself apprentice by indenture in January 1808 to serve Scott as a mariner for 7 years. He did so serve until about 8 December 1811, when Scott laid up his ship, the Favorite, and Young's father Robert Young, then applied to him for the release of his son in order that he could appoint him Mate of his own ship, the Friends, which sailed from Newcastle around 13 December. As the ship had sailed no proper endorsement or signature was made to cancel Thomas Young's indentures, but Scott nevertheless considered Young to be no longer his apprentice, nor did he have any claim to him or his earnings.
Folio 159: enclosure with folios 155-156 Sworn statement dated 31 January 1812 by Robert Young, Church Way, North Shields, father of Thomas, at Church Way, South Shields, that his son had been Mate of his ship as his affidavit would show, and that his indenture had been given up by his former master who had no further claim on him. If their Lordships are of a different opinion he is willing to pay any stipulated sum.
