Description

Folios 103-104: Wilson Rathborne, North Shields. Advising that Johan Manuel was detained at Sunderland on 14 December 1811 and sent to him as a prisoner of war. He pretended to be a common sailor but Rathborne says he did not look like such. Sends the protection produced and two letters. Manuel has been sent to the Nore in the Lyra tender.

Folios 105-106: enclosure with folios 103-104. Letter dated 23 December 1811 by A. Herbert, Sunderland, a 'loyal French clergyman' living in Sunderland, saying that he knows John Manuel is an Italian, a gentleman born as should be evident from his protection, recently impressed. Says Manuel was employed in the textile trade and has been impressed before but released - puts his current situation down to the jealousy and spite of others who laid false information against him. Refers to Manuel as a 'charming youth' whose only crime is to be a foreigner.

Folios 107-108: enclosure with folios 103-104. Further letter dated 28 December 1811 from A. Herbert, Sunderland, explaining he had thought that as Manuel had been freed on a previous occasion by one of Rathborne's lieutenants there must have been sufficient cause or documentation produced to allow this, especially as the same thing had taken place elsewhere on another occasion. A long letter justifying himself and reiterating his reasons for believing Manuel to be a gentleman and innocent of any fraudulent behaviour.

Folios 109-110: enclosure with folios 103-104. Printed protection form for foreigners, dated 5 August 1809, stating that Johan Manuel, aged 27, was born at Leghorn and is a subject of the Duke of Tuscany, therefore exempt from the Impress.
