Description

Folios 444-445: Wilson Rathborne, Regulating Officer, North Shields. Responding to the letter of 9 December and sends a report on the case of Thomas Griffen. He returns the enclosure and the Protection taken from Griffen when pressed. Thomas Griffen was pressed by Lieutenant Flinn of North Shields on 16 November. He was detained for the Service as it appeared that the Protection produced did not belong to him. His real name is Gribben and he was born in County Down, Ireland, while the Protection states he was born in North Shields. He is also stated to have been to Greenland three times, when he has actually been only once. Thomas Griffen is 21 is years old. He is an active, stout, young man, well suited for service at sea.

Folio 446: enclosure with folios 444-445. Protection dated 13 November 1811 in the name of Thomas Griffen, born in North Shields, Northumberland, and living in North Shields, Northumberland.

Folio 447: enclosure with folios 444-445. Affidavit dated 4 December 1811 by Christopher Cockcroft and Thomas Parkin, Custom House, Whitby, certifying that Thomas Griffin is one of the Boatsteerers of the ship William and is employed in the Greenland fishing trade.

Folio 448: enclosure with folios 444-445. Affidavit dated 6 December 1811 by Francis Agar, Whitby, Managing Owner of the ship William and Anne, certifying that Thomas Griffin is one of the Boatsteerers of the ship William and Anne, of Whitby. Requests his discharge.
