Description

Folios 402-403: Wilson Rathborne, Regulating Officer, North Shields. Responding to the letter of 2 December and sends a report on the case of Russell Brown Rick, as called in the books. He returns the enclosure with the protection taken from Rick when pressed. Russell Brown Rick was pressed by Lieutenant Flinn, North Shields, on 20 November and detained as being an Apprentice above 3 years at sea and above 19 years old. On questioning he acknowledged he had been at sea 3 and ½ years, and that he had a Protection 1 and ½ years ago, whilst the one procured is dated only last February, which clearly proves him to be in a second Apprenticeship. Russel Brown Rick is over 19 years old, a stout healthy young man well suited for service.

Folios 404-405: enclosure with folios 402-403. Letter dated 29 November 1811 from Russell Brown to The Admiralty. Writing about his son, Russell Rick Brown, who has mistakenly been called Russell Brown Rick and was pressed on 20 November. This has caused his family great distress. He is intended in the future to take command of a Merchant ship, and he believes that this will not be possible if he sent to a man of war. Requests his discharge. Is willing to pay a sum to be determined.

Folios 406-407: enclosure with folios 402-403. Protection dated 23 February 1811 in the name of Russell brown Rick, Apprentice to Matthew Hunter from 10 July 1810 for 3 years.
