Description

Folio 361: David Ramsay, Regulating Officer, Leith Rendezvous. Responding to the letter of 14 November and sends a report on the case of James White, a very stout Landsman. He came to the Rendezvous perfectly sober and enlisted. He did not mention ever belonging to the Local Militia. He is age 24, has the appearance of a farmer, and is now on board the Nightingale which is out on a cruise. and returns the enclosure.

Folio 362: enclosure with folio 361. G Edwards, Notary Public, Edinburgh, certifying that the Petition is true and correct to the best of his knowledge.

Folio 363: enclosure with folio 361. Letter dated 11 November 1811 from G S Edwards, Writer and Notary Public, 27 Clyde Street, Edinburgh, to The Admiralty. Encloses a Petition and requests a response.

Folios 365-366: enclosure with folio 361. Undated Petition of James White, Inchinnan, near Glasgow, currently on board HMS Nightingale, Leith Roads. Petition to be transferred to HMS Adamant, guard ship, and to remain there pending a decision. Offers to provide an able-bodied Seaman in his place, or whatever is stipulated. He is a farmer, has never been at sea, and is required on the family farm, which he runs with his brother. He entered himself when intoxicated, completely out of character. He has served a considerable time as a non-commissioned Officer in the Local Militia.
