Folios 317-318: Edward Rodney, HMS Africaine, Spithead. Reports that Thomas Dalby of HMS Africaine wishes to leave the service on paying £50 as his private affairs in the West Indies (his native country) require his presence there. Requests his discharge under these conditions, or if the settlement is insufficient, to let him know what is required. Thomas Dalby is a black man aged 36. He was pressed at Halifax by HMS Driver from the Arathusco Guineamen on 6 July 1803, and remained in her until 9 April 1805, when he was discharged into HMS Cleopatra, to which he belonged until 20 August ?1811, when he joined HMS Africaine. He says he received no bounty, and because of infirmities will be no great loss to the service.
