Folios 288-289: Wilson Rathborne, Regulating Officer, North Shields. Responding to the letter of 28 October. Reports that the pleasure boat on which the French prisoners Jean Smith and Nicolas Kambran escaped belongs to a Mr Hay of Lesbury and had been lying at Alnmouth with provisions ready for an excursion the following day. It appears that nobody else was on board, and no-one assisted in the escape. He is not even certain that the two men on the boat were the escaped prisoners; only that two men answering their description were seen in the boat by the crew of a brig going in to harbour.
