Description

Folios 236-237: Wilson Rathborne, Regulating Officer, North Shields. Responds tot he letter of 14 October and sends a report on the cases of David Wayman, HMS Egmont, and John Henderson, Lyra tender. He returns the enclosures and the papers taken from them when pressed. David Wayman, Ordinary seaman, was pressed by Lieutenant Flinn, North Shields, on 14 May last, and detained for the service as being as Apprentice illegally appointed Mate for the purpose of protecting him from pressing. Captain Rathborne allowed time for the Master to write to Aldeburgh for proof of his being our of his Apprenticeship, when the enclosed letter was received from the Owner, acknowledging him to be apprenticed for 3 years, and that he was appointed Mate to avoid pressing. David Wayman is about 21 years old, a stout, healthy young man, well suited for service. John Henderson, Ordinary seaman, was also pressed by Lieutenant Flinn on 28 September and detained on information that he had been a fisherman before being bound to James Fhew. The Master acknowledged that Henderson could steer when he was bound. he was Second Mate of the vessel and the Master intended to cancel the Indenture and make him Chief Mate. The Indenture does not appear to bear the usual mark of a Protection having been granted, although one is produced. John Henderson is 26 years old, an active healthy young man, and has the appearance of having been at sea for seem time.

Folios 238-239: enclosure with folios 236-237. Letter dated 12 October 1811 from Ingram Hertford, Alan Square, to The Admiralty. Writing in the absence of the two members for Orford, to explain that David Wayman of Orford, Apprentice to Mr Stunt for 3 years in the coal trade, was pressed at Shields and is now on board HMS egmont in The Downs. Requests he is discharged to his father, who is a farmer on Mr Hertford's estate.

Folios 240-241: enclosure with folios 236-237. Letter dated May 24 1811 from J Hunt, Orford, to The Admiralty. Reports that he has received a letter from Thomas Read, Master of the brig Friendship, of Aldeburgh and now in Newcastle, telling him that his Mate, David Whayman, has been pressed. David Whayman was a regular servant to Mr Hunt and served at sea for 3 years for £30. Mr Hunt has made an Affidavit before John Randall, witnessed by Rev Mr Connor, both of Orford, stating that David Whayman is now the Mate. Requests his discharge. He sends a few shillings to defray his expenses. Note dated May 24 1811: he has received from Captain Rathborne the one pound mentioned above: C D Whaymen.

Folio 241: enclosure with folios 236-237. Statement dated 20 May 1811 by J Hunt, sworn before John Randall, Justice of the Peace, and witnessed by John Connor, Minister, both of Orford, Suffolk. John Hunt swears that he is the Owner of the brig Friendship of Aldeburgh, and that what he has written relating to David Whayman is the truth.

Folio 242: enclosure with folios 236-237. Affidavit dated 1 April 1811 made by Thomas Read of Woodbridge, Owner of the vessel Friendship of Aldeburgh, and sworn before John Randall, Justice of the Peace, Orford, Suffolk, that David Whayman is Chief Mate of the vessel.

Folio 243: enclosure with folios 236-237. Protection dated 11 August 1809 in the name of John Henderson, bound as Apprentice to James Fhew of Shields.

Folio 245: enclosure with folios 236-237. Application for the Discharge of Impressed Men dated 12 October 1811, for the discharge of John Henderson, pressed at Shields from the ship Diligent. Application made by Thomas Wooster, Owner, with production of the Indenture [not present].
