Folios 176-177: Thomas Flinn on behalf of Wilson Rathborne, Regulating Office, North Shields. Responds to the letter of 24 September with a report on the case of John Gray, currently on board the tender Lyra, and returns the enclosures with the Protection taken from John Gray when pressed. John Gray, an Able Seaman, was pressed by Lieutenant France, Newcastle, on 17 September and detained as having no legal Protection. He produced the enclosed Protection as Line Manager last year. but did not show any proof of his being given security to proceed the next season. He is 23 years old, has been at sea for 10 years, and is a healthy man well suited for service.
Folios 178-179: enclosure with folios 176-177. Letter dated 21 September 1811 from W H Bolton, Hull to the Admiralty. States that John Gray has a Protection for his ship Lord Wellington, but has been pressed at Shields. The Protection was made out in error at the Custom House with the date 1810, instead of 1811. The ship is not yet 12 months old, so this is clearly an error. Requests his immediate discharge.
