Description

Folios 148-149: Alexander Wilmot Schomberg, HMS Loire, Spithead. Reports his arrival from Guadeloupe with Captain General Ernouf, late governor of the island, with all his household and staff, Colonel Faiyos, late second in command, with his family, servants etc., Colonel St Henry and other officers all with their families and 53 seamen. A total of 113 prisoners of war. States that he left Guadeloupe with a convoy of nine transports, HMS Alcmenen, carrying the Judge of Guadaloupe as a prisoner, and HMS Savage under Captain Ferrie. He details the very bad weather encountered during which he lost sight of HMS Alcemen and then the transports, and HMS Loire was damaged severely. En route he asked Captain Peak of HMS Peacock to look out for the transports. States that he encloses various documents but the Log, Weekly Accounts and a List of the Convoy are missing.

Folio 151: enclosure with folios 148-149. List of defects on HMS Loire signed by the Captain and by John Ayling, Boatswain.

Folios 152-153: enclosure with folios 148-149. The Honourable Sir Alexander Cochrane, Commander in Chief of HM Ships and Vessels employed at Barbados, Leeward Islands and Guadeloupe on board HMS Pompee, orders Captain Schomberg on HMS Loire to take on board the officials from Guadeloupe listed above, to take under orders the Captains of HMS Alcmene and HMS Savage and also to take charge of a convoy of nine transports carrying many prisoners of war.
