Folios 60-61: Herbert Sawyer, HMS Nassau, Sheerness. Reports that Henry Norris, who has been detained by a recruiting party led by Lieutenant H I Frejent of the Marines, does indeed belong to the Nassau and was given leave to go to Liverpool. He made out a ticket of leave, but Norris managed to leave this behind, encloses a certificate of the circumstances.
Folios 62-63: enclosed with folios 60-61. Letter from Marine Lieutenant H I Frejent, Warrington, to the Admiralty 10 February 1796. Reports that one of his sergeants detained Henry Norris of HMS Nassau, encloses the paper he produced but suspected him of being a deserter. Is not sure whether he should have written to Captain Herbert Sawyer of the Nassau first, but he did not know where the ship was. Reports on the difficulties of recruiting in his district.
Folios 64-65: enclosed with folios 60-61. Certificate signed by Captain Herbert Sawyer, HMS Nassau, Sheerness, 31 January 1796 that Henry Norris has leave until 28 February.
Folios 66: enclosure with folios 62-63. Ticket of leave signed by Captain Henry Savage, HMS Nassau, giving Henry Norris leave from 1 to 28 February.
Folios 67-68: enclosed with folios 60-61. Letter from Evan Nepean, Secretary of the Admiralty, to Captain Herbert Sawyer, HMS Nassau, Sheerness. Encloses a letter received from Lieutenant H I Frejent of the Marines at Warrington reporting that his recruiting party has detained Henry Norris, a seaman from the Nassau, as a suspected deserter. Norris was carrying the enclosed ticket, asks Captain Sawyer to confirm whether it is genuine and explain why Norris was not carrying a proper ticket of leave. Postscript. He should return the enclosures.
