Folios 291-292: Henry Edwin Stanhope, HMS Ruby, Plymouth. Reports that Captain William O'Brien Drury has indicated, through Sir Richard King, his hope that Captain Stanhope will accept his apology and withdraw his letter of 30 [?January] to the Vice Admiral requesting a Court Martial to investigate his conduct for the reasons stated. Captain Stanhope gave his conditional agreement, provided that a number of Captain Drury's friends go on board HMS Ruby and investigate in detail how far there could be grounds for his conduct towards Captain Stanhope on board HMS Cambridge on 29 [?January] which is apparently stated in Captain Drury's letter, not seen by Captain Stanhope. Enclosed is the report from Captain Thomas Wells, Sir Charles Hamilton, and Pulteney Malcolm, confirming that Captain Drury did abuse him in the presence of Vice Admiral Sir Richard King, Captain Richard Fisher and Sir Charles Hamilton. As Captain Drury has apologised, Captain Stanhope asks permission to withdraw his complaint. Also suggests that it may be appropriate to investigate the conduct of the former Lieutenant John Flinn, based on the report of the three Captains, which is enclosed.
Folios 293-294: enclosure with folios 291-292. Statement dated 8 February 1795 signed by Thomas Wells, Charles Hamilton and Pulteney Malcolm. At the request of Captain Stanhope they have been on board HMS Ruby to investigate a report very prejudicial to Captain Stanhope and the discipline of His Majesty's Service. They have interviewed the Lieutenants and Principal Officers of HMS Ruby and are of the opinion that the said report is groundless and without foundation. Some idle rumours had been circulated, and appear to have originated with Lieutenant Flinn, the former Third Lieutenant of HMS Ruby.
