Folios 271-272: [Matthew] Squire, HMS Magnificent, Blackstakes. Encloses a letter received today from the Gunner of HMS Magnificent. Captain Squire feels that he is not fit to perform his duty due to infirmity. He is almost constantly in bed due to rheumatic pains. He has been a good Officer.
Folios 273-274: enclosure with folios 271-272. Letter dated 3 August 1795 from Samuel Thompson, Gunner, HMS Magnificent to Captain Squire. The writer has served upwards of 40 years, but is very infirm and unable to undertake his duties at sea. There are 18 months left before he is entitled to superannuation. Asks to be moved to a post as Ordinary Seaman, or on shore, to serve the remainder of his time.
