Description

Folios 259-260: [Matthew] Squire, [Regulating Officer], 19 New Street, Knightsbridge, [London]. Reports that on the day he was appointed he sent one of his Lieutenants to take rooms for a Rendezvous in Brentford, feeling this was the best place to receive the new levied men in the western part of the County. Captain Squire attended the sessions at Clerkenwell and informed the Justices that he had been appointed to regulate men in Middlesex. He has been attempting to set up a Rendezvous in Islington or Pancras, as being the best site for the north and east of the County, but has been unsuccessful. People do not want to let their rooms to receive criminals or for a lock-up house. He has worked ceaselessly for the last 4 days to execute his orders, but did not get a second Lieutenant until today. He has also been working on the task, but so far they have not succeeded. The Rendezvous at Brentford is ready, and he will regulate the few men that can be brought in wherever he can find a room. Gives assurance of his best efforts, despite never having worked in this service before. He finds it will be impossible to please every Parish, and expects there will be daily complaints.
